The beach clean was well-supported, with more than twenty bags of beach litter being collected for disposal. Many of us take the beach a little for granted without considering that it needs tending in just the same way as our parks and gardens, so bravo to the volunteers who turned-out to do their bit for the local community. As the chart to the right shows, some of the items of litter that find their way into the sea and onto our beaches can be with us for a considerable period of time unless they're cleared-up, and can cause serious harm or even death to marine species such as whales, dolphins, seals and birdlife. Same place, same time, next year? [Thanks to the Waikato, NZ, Regional Council for the use of their poster.] |
