Note Re: Contract Procedures and Progress.

[The Carradale Goat] Barry Colville with Richard Cameron.

The outline design of the new Clubhouse was produced by Richard Cameron, a member of the golf club and formerly Director of Planning to the Highland Regional Council. The brief was to provide for better changing accommodation and a south facing lounge for social gathering. Special features would include a small fully fitted kitchen, a toilet for the disabled and an integral shower unit. A spacious attic is fully floored for a variety of future uses and solar panels are installed for water heating. Construction is energy friendly, traditional in method, using minimum maintenance materials and heavy insulation throughout.

Following the grant of planning permission in the Spring of 2008, further plans were prepared for tendering purposes.

Tenders were invited from five local building contractors for detail design, specification and construction. Pricing was keen and competitive and the contract was awarded to McKinven & Colville, Campbeltown in September 2008, subject to necessary funding approvals, courtesy of SportScotland and HIE, and the issue of Building Warrant.

The existing clubhouse had been erected in 1961 and had served the club well. It was of wood construction so presented no major problems in demolition, allowing new construction work to commence early in January 2009.

Barry Colville of McKinven & Colville took personal charge of job management, preparing a 22 week work programme and cash flow projection, meeting regularly on site with Richard Cameron, instructing his workmen and co-ordinating his sub- contractors. Under his experienced control and his close co-operation with the Golf Club, the work progressed satisfactorily throughout, and the substantial building work was completed on schedule. Various detail furbishments and snagging items continued, but always with the ready assistance and co-operation of McKinven and Colville. Richard Cameron said that he could not have wished for a better contractor, nor more professional and diligent workmen on site. Cost control was maintained with the co-operation of the contractor and overall it was a pleasure to work with McKinven & Colville and their sub contractors who included AJC Civils Ltd for engineering works, foundations and drainage work; McEachran & Robertson Ltd for roof tiling and Roughcasting; LDW Plumbers from Lochgilphead; Archie Housten, Electrician, Gregor McGregor, Painters, and Duncan McMillan for floor finishes.
