02-05-20 Edinburgh Tradfest 2020
present Wild Mountain Thyme.
With thanks to Lorne McDougall (Carradale)
Today was intended to be the first day of Edinburgh Tradfest 2020, but due to circumstances outside of everybody’s control, this can no longer happen. In lieu of planned events, but in the sustained celebration of the best of international trad music, the team here at Edinburgh Tradfest have been working to produce something else to get you singing along from the safety of your own home.
Featuring 36 of the artists from our Festival programme (including acclaimed folk musician and this year’s festival headliner Eliza Carthy), this one-of-a-kind recording brings together the sounds of Scotland, Ireland, North America and beyond in an elaborate, international, digital jamboree.
Huge thanks must of course go to our host of contributors, to Traditional Artist in Residence at The University of Edinburgh Mike Vass who arranged and produced the recording, and Ruth Barrie from Waltzer Films who edited the footage into its final, polished form.
Wild Mountain Thyme is a song well beloved across the globe, and in light of today’s extraordinary situation some of its lyrics are particularly resonant.
We plan to postpone this year’s line-up until 2021, with proposed Festival dates of 30th April – 10th May. Looking ahead we hope indeed to once again ‘all go together’, on the other, safer, side.
In such a precarious economic climate, we are reaching out to our audiences and the wider trad community to assist raising the funds to ensure that this can go ahead. The future of the creative industries is uncertain, and for those who feel able to assist, every little helps. Our donations page can be found here: https://www.givey.com/edinburghtradfest2021
As a thank you from us, every donation of £5 or more will earn the donor an mp3 download of this unique recording. These will be sent out individually so please bear with us!
Please spread Wild Mountain Thyme far and wide - sing alongs encouraged! Share your renditions online if you feel brave enough, and tag us if you do. Stay home and stay safe.
